This colorful, small slow cooker is perfect for parties, dips, appetizers, or even a small meal. It also adds a bright pop to your kitchen counter. With a rubber gasket on the lid to seal it tight, and glorified rubber bands to hold the lid in place, this slow cooker can make the trip from your house to a family get-together or potluck without spilling its contents.
To test the power of this little cooker, we made a baked chicken recipe (with four chicken breasts) and a cherry cobbler recipe (that included a 21-oz. can of cherry pie filling and a box of cake mix).
We found that this slow cooker cooked our test recipes completely in the shortest amount of time each recipe suggested.
We cooked the chicken recipe for 8 hours. It tasted great but was a little overcooked. In the future, we will test the chicken with a meat thermometer after it’s cooked for 7 hours (or 1 hour before the end of the shortest cooking time suggested). If the temperature is below 165 degrees at that point, we will continue cooking for 30 minutes more and then check again.
The overcooking is not necessarily the fault of the cooker. It likely means that the recipe called for the chicken to cook too long, at least in this model.
The cherry cobbler we tested was moist and cakey, and not doughy or undercooked. It was perfect when cooked for 2.5 hours on low, again the shortest amount of time the recipe suggested.
Overall, the Proctor Silex performed well for smaller recipes. We can’t recommend it for large groups since it can’t handle big quantities.
