“5 Days To Go!” Giveaway

slow cooker 1

Breast Cancer Awareness Month starts in just 5 days, and this year we have a special reason to be excited about that.

October 1 also marks the date when the Fix-It and Forget-It Pink Cookbook will be on sale everywhere in both print and e-formats. If you can’t wait until October 1, and want to buy your copy right now, click here. Remember, a minimum of one dollar for every copy sold will be donated by the publisher to The Avon Foundation for Women Breast Cancer Crusade.

We want to include you in the excitement by giving away one of our favorite slow cookers. The All-Clad 6.5-quart programmable slow cooker features High and Low settings, and automatically switches to Keep Warm when time elapses. That means dinner is ready when you are. The removable black ceramic insert provides gentle uniform heat to create richly flavored soups, stews, casseroles, and braised meats. Both the insert and the tempered glass lid are dishwasher-safe.

(All-Clad doesn’t know that we’re giving away this slow cooker.)

Hello – I made crockpot chicken with potatoes and veggies for a friend that
      had brain surgery.

I love to use the crockpot for many different recipes.

I made my mom and dad a pot roast when mom had surgery! I also use it every 5th Sunday at church for potluck. My crock pot gets used at least once a week. Love it!

My sister has extreme health problems, but she is always doing something wonderful for the family members, or the church. When she was battling cancer, and said that food didn’t taste very good, she kept talking about my Buffalo Chicken Noodle Soup. My husband and I plotted to get her house key, and I cooked the soup in her crockpot while she was at work. When she got home, exhausted from work, she was met at the door with the wonderful smell of the soup, and the realization that cooking was one less thing between her and her bed for the night. She still talks about it, and I have decided to do it again. Love the smile on her face when she talks about it!!

When I was getting ready to have surgery a few years ago, my good friend Leslie made me several meals that we could just heat and eat. One of them was white chicken Enchiladas, they were some of the best enchiladas I had ever eaten! When I was feeling better I asked her to share the recipe with me.

My sister recently had a baby, I made her a few freezer meals. I think her favorite was the mushroom and wild rice soup :)

When I had my last baby, a neighbor brought me a whole roasted chicken, with red potatoes and carrots. STILL HOT! It was soooo wonderful and so much appreciated <3

A friend brought over a simple casserole, rolls, and dessert after my hysterectomy. Since my husband doesn’t cook, I still say this was the best meal I’ve ever had. It’s the little things in life that mean so much.

  • Heather Winkler posted at 12:08 pm on Wednesday, September 26, 2012

My father was house bound during his final years and I would always keep the slow cooker going in the house. This is going to sound strange and not really a mean but he loved it when I made spiced cider. He sipped it all the time because his meds made his throat dry and it made the house smell fabulous! Regardless if I win or not, thanks for the memory.

  • Roxanne J. posted at 12:08 pm on Wednesday, September 26, 2012

For a friend/coworker death in the family I made my version of chicken and dumplings in the crock pot. She enjoyed it and it made her think of all the times her mother would make it from scratch on the stove. Nothing like a warm bowl of something good to warm the soul.

  • Jason E Bintz posted at 12:08 pm on Wednesday, September 26, 2012

My housemate went to a local butcher shop and got ground bison and ground elk, along with fresh made italian sausage, came home and made this amazing chili. We were eating it for 3-4 days after.

As a matter of fact I have a roast in the slow cooker right now! I am using it to make “taco beef” and then taking the meat and some taco fixings over to a friends house who has a teenage son in the hospital this week.

Whenever I am sick, I crave the same thing. My grandmother’s chicken and sausage gumbo. She tries to keep it in her freezer because she knows someone is going to need it! It is a simple recipe, and I have made it many times, but when I am sick, hers is the best, and it makes me feel better.

  • Jen Harvey posted at 12:09 pm on Wednesday, September 26, 2012

I made sausage and spinach stuffed butternut squash and a plum tart for a friend who just had a baby. She didn’t need to worry about cooking at the time!

I love making homemade chicken soup (with homemade stock, made in a slow cooker!) for my friends when they are ill. The BEST meal I had was the day after I came home from the hospital after giving birth to my son. A friend made me homemade jambalaya – full of fresh veggies and turkey sausage. It was truly restorative, after hospital food and going through labor and recovery.

  • heather posted at 12:09 pm on Wednesday, September 26, 2012

When I had surgery I had several of my friend bring me meals so that my husband did not have to cook after a long day at work and did not have to spend time in the kitchen. I have the best friends ever. My husband just cracked my crockpot :(

After my mother had back surgery, our pastors brought us a wonderful honey mustard chicken with sides of mashed potatoes and asparagus, some delightful artisan bread with jam and the most important . . . chocolate for dessert. It was the perfect mix of healthy, filling, comforting, easy and delicious!
