Ever wondered how many calories a typical Olympic athlete consumes each day? Turns out there’s no such thing as typical when it comes to calorie needs; it all depends on the athlete’s event.
Cyclists, rowers, marathoners and others who engage in intense activity over a long period are the ones who get to pack in the carbs before an event. At the other end of the spectrum are those who compete in events based on weight class. (Remember those high school wrestlers who always made a big deal about fasting before a match?)
NPR’s food blog, The Salt, takes a look at the type and number of calories consumed in preparation for different Olympic events.
And while there’s no hard-and-fast rule governing calorie needs, we’re pretty sure that if your chosen activity for the next two weeks is couch surfing, you’d better leave that plate of doughnuts for someone else!
